Who this programme is for
Graduates and career changers who want to build and ship complete web applications. No prior professional experience is assumed, but you should be prepared for a heavy amount of writing code.
What you will be able to do
- Build accessible, responsive interfaces with React and TypeScript
- Design and implement a REST API with authentication and validation
- Model data properly in SQL and know when not to reach for an ORM
- Write tests that give you the confidence to refactor
- Deploy an application and keep it running
Syllabus
Module 1 — Web fundamentals
HTML semantics and accessibility, modern CSS including flexbox and grid, responsive design, and how the browser actually renders a page.
Module 2 — JavaScript and TypeScript
Language fundamentals, closures and scope, the event loop, promises and async/await, modules, and the type system that keeps a growing codebase honest.
Module 3 — React
Components and props, state and effects, hooks and custom hooks, forms, routing, data fetching and caching, and performance work that is measured rather than guessed.
Module 4 — Backend with Node
HTTP and REST design, Express, middleware, input validation, authentication with sessions and JWT, authorisation, error handling and file uploads.
Module 5 — Databases
Relational modelling, SQL in depth, indexes and query plans, transactions, migrations, and a working introduction to document stores.
Module 6 — Testing and quality
Unit, integration and end-to-end testing, test doubles, coverage as a signal rather than a target, linting and formatting, and code review practice.
Module 7 — Shipping
Build tooling, environment configuration, containerised deployment, CI, logging and monitoring, and the web security basics every developer is expected to know.
Module 8 — Capstone
Design, build, test and deploy a full application of your own, reviewed in stages the way a real team reviews work.
